Paperback. Condition: New. This collection features four peer-reviewed literature reviews on bone health in poultry. The first chapter reviews the literature on genetic mapping of skeletal traits in both broilers and layers, including both the genetics of skeletal defects and bone quality. As the chapter shows, linkage mapping and genome-wide association studies have identified promising candidate genes with potential for breeding more robust birds. The second chapter focuses on bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), one of the most common causes of lameness in broilers. The chapter summarizes the pathogenesis of BCO and reviews the efficacy of probiotics as a prophylactic treatment. The third chapter discusses bone health in laying hens. It reviews bone development, keel and other bone health problems and factors contributing to poor bone health. It also summarises key strategies for improving bone health, including breeding, nutrition, rearing practices and housing. The final chapter assesses the problem of lameness in intensively-reared broiler flocks. The chapter also discusses skin health in broilers. It summarises key risk factors as well as ways of monitoring and reducing the problem, from breeding programmes and enrichment to sequential feeding regimes.

First Edition
Wraps. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Chicago: Chicago Astronomical Society, 1956 and 1957. First Editions. Wraps, technically quarto at 10" high, but in fact closer to octavo in appearance. Overall, very good condition. These had been delicately stapled together at one time, but the traces of that fact are almost unnoticeable. See scans. Some age toning and light folds to some issues. Eight issues of the Robert G. Johnsson-edited publication of the Chicago Astronomical Society. Extraordinarily scarce. Earliest issue here is Number 19 overall, February of 1956, with "Filter Facts and Fancies" (James C. Bartlett, Jr., Baltimore, MD) filling essentially the entire 5 pages of the issue. In Number 20 (March, 1956, 6 pp.), editor Johnsson presents "Kepler and His Laws" and "Colongitude" with some formulae and tables. Number 21 (April, 1956, 8 pp), features "Lunar Colors" by D.P. Avigliano, Sierra Madre, CA. Number 22 (May, 1956, 6 pp.) carries "The Discovery of Saturn's Inner Crepe Ring", by Richard M. Baum, Upton-by-Chester, England. Number 23 (June, 1956, 8 pp) has for its lead Allen C. Montague's "The Surface Features of Mars". Number 24 (September, 1956, 9 pp.) has another offering from James C. Bartlett, "Principles of Environmental Adaptation as Applied to Possible Lunar Plants" (even now, not as ridiculous as it sounds, and level-headedly treated way back then by Bartlett). Number 25 (October, 1956, 6 pp) offers a contribution from a professional, Thomas A. Cragg of Mt. Wilson Observatory: "The Evidence For Saturn's D Ring". In Number 26 (November, 1956, 8 pp) provides practical help for telescope builders with Russell McNiel's (sic) "Mirror Aluminizing", and carries a full page line-drawing cartoon by.editor Johnsson. Number 27 (Spring 1957) shows changes in progress: the publication - now quarterly, after 10 monthly issues per year prior - is on better paper, glossy, 15 pages and the additional content that goes with that. In this issue: "On the Martian Surface Features" (Gerard P. Kuiper, Yerkes Observatory; reprinted with permission), including a photographic plate of "Dawes forked bay" on Mars, taken through an 82" telescope (Yerkes?); The Nova Search Program (George Dietrich, Chairman, A.A.V.S.O.) , with tables and rather involved information on how to start a Nova search program of one's own, including tables; "Asteroid Notes", by Baxter Mow; "Photography of Halo Phenomena" (Guenter D. Roth, Munich, Germany), with a sample solar halo photo; "The Great Exploration" (regarding publication of Section One of the Sky Survey Photographic Atlas of the Heavens), Dr. Ira S. Bowen, Director of the Palomar and Mount Wilson Observatories (reprinted with permission); "Checking Your Sidereal Clock By The Government Time Signals Should Be Simple." (C.C. Wylie, University of Iowa); "Martians Scoff at Intelligent Earthlings" (humor, William Stringer), and.another cartoon by R.G. Johnsson. Yes, he did use two S's in his name. Fascinating trip to 50's high-amateur - and professional - astronomy, and scarcer than hen's teeth. L102.
