A study of the form of lyric poetry known as the "alba", a form which first made its appearance in Southern France in the mid-12th century and rapidly spread to the other countries of medieval Europe. The plot was always similar: the ecstatic love-making of a knight and a lady (not his wife) is interrupted by the dawn, signalled by bird song or the call of a watchman. The lovers must part, the knight going off into the world while the lady remains behind in anguish. Fine in dust jacket with fade to the spine.

Wear, tear and repair to D/J. The alba is a form of lyric poetry which made its first appearance in Southern France during the middle of the twelfth century and which rapidly spread to most of the other countries of medieval Europe. The poems were written in Provecal, in Medieval French, and in Middle High German, and they later appeared in England as parts of longer works by Chaucer and Shakespeare. The plot is always the same: the ecstatic love-making of a knight and a lady (not the knight's wife) is interrupted by the dawn, announced by the song of birds or by the warning voice of a watchman. The lovers prtest the interruption, but inevitably must part; the knight goes off into the outer world and the lady remains behind in anguish. This study forcuses on the alba and attempts to understand its tenchinques and meanings not only in its own terms but also for the light such understanding throws on other forms of medieval lyric and their later derivatives. 315 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

This book tells the life story of Jonathan Saville, a remarkable man who, despite being born with a broken thigh that left him deformed and disabled, went on to become a successful minister and a beloved figure in the Methodist movement of the 18th and 19th centuries. The author provides a vivid and moving account of Saville's early life, his struggles with adversity, and his ultimate triumph over physical and social barriers. Through Saville's story, the book explores themes of faith, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit. It offers a valuable historical perspective on the role of Methodism in 18th-century England, and provides insights into the challenges and rewards of living with a disability in a time when such individuals were often marginalized and excluded. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
