L'évolution de la problématique de scolarisation en milieu autochtone mène vers le constat de la perduratio…n de multiples difficultés. S'inscrivant dans un paradigme compréhensif, c'est à cela que s'attaque la présente recherche, en utilisant le cadre théorique du rapport à l'école et au savoir développé par des sociologues français oeuvrant en milieu populaire. Les résultats montrent que l'école a une grande importance pour la plupart des jeunes Amérindiens, attachés à leur identité amérindienne, mais résolument modernes. Considérée positivement comme lieu d'apprentissage, l'école est aussi appréciée comme endroit où se fonde l'amitié juvénile. Mais surtout, elle est valorisée comme institution de première ligne, essentielle au développement personnel et communautaire, et devant contribuer à une éducation à la citoyenneté responsable. Le diplôme de fin d'études se voit attribuer une forte valeur symbolique; il est vu comme un sauf-conduit menant quasi automatiquement à «un métier que j'aime» pour «aller voir le monde».
