Hardcover. Condition: Fine. One of 80 copies. Quarto. 30, (5)pp. One of 80 copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked "Clover Hill." Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most important work. According to Hodnett in Five Centuries of Book Illustration, it was with The Chester Play of the Deluge, first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1927, that Jones reached his full artistic maturity. Its ten wood engravings "are as original a series of illustrations as any in an English book," Hodnett observes. "Jones's innovation was to integrate the elements of each design in a complex overall pattern by means of interlocking bands of solid black or white." In terms of how these engravings were printed in the Golden Cockerel edition, however, Jones felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones gave Clover Hill Editions his blessing to reprint the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present edition, the illustrations are at once dark, clear, and retain their minute detail in the fine lines. This copy also contains a portfolio of wood engravings printed on Japon. In the portfolio, the images are printed directly from the blocks onto the Japon, revealing even greater clarity in Jones's work. The book is very fine in the publisher's binding of morocco-backed marbled boards. The book and portfolio are housed in a linen slipcase with a paper label on the spine. Bookplate. (Cleverdon, 19).
Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Small quarto. 15pp. Illustrated with thirteen wood engravings by Jones, all of them typographically and thematically harmonious. Though black-and-white, the engravings seem to take on an intensity of color and tone to suit the tumultuous seafaring experience of Jonah. Bound in plain buckram with gilt titling to spine. Mild overall toning, more obvious at spine, occasional motes of soiling to covers, "919" in ink at top of title page. Front panel of dust wrapper laid in to rear; this featuring Jones's "The Resurrection of Christ," which also appears as at title motif. VG+, with a desirable association. One of 175 copies. Presentation copy from "Arundell," who wrote the introduction to another 1926 Jones-illustrated Golden Cockerel publication, "Pompey the Little.".

Number 'XXX1' of only 80 special copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked 'Clover Hill' (made for Douglas Cleverdon in 1936). The BOOK is in Fine condition, bound in quarter-morocco and marbled boards. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most significant work. These engravings were initially printed in the Golden Cockerel edition in 1927. Jones, however, felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones agreed to 'Clover Hill Editions' reprinting the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present edition, the illustrations are at once dark, clear, and retain their minute detail in the fine lines. This copy also contains a separate portfolio of the ten wood engravings printed on Japon. In the portfolio, the images are printed directly from the blocks onto the Japon, revealing even greater clarity in Jones's work. The engravings are all in Fine condition. The book and portfolio are housed in the publisher's original linen slipcase with a printed paper label on the spine. Loosely inserted are the complete four publisher's Prospectii : The original prospectus only referring to the standard and special copies : A further one referring to the publication of seven 'Copies on Vellum' : The third referring to twenty five limited sets of prints on Japon and finally the fourth prospectus, which refers to all three formats and the sets on Japon. A very handsome production. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

This is number '1' of a total edition size of only 240 copies. Light pushing at the spine ends and some tiny rubs to the rear panel and upper edge spine cloth. Tiny amount of spotting to the text-block. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Publisher's errata page present. Batchlor & Sons hand made paper printed on the Stanhope Press. Full page wood-engraving 'The Bride' and title page decoration by David Jones. In 'A Survey of the Engravings of David Jones' page 19, Cleverdon wrote ' To the end of his life, David was particularly fond of this engraving'. It was a remaking of a failed first illustration for 'The Ancient Mariner' in which he had wanted to evoke a nun taking the veil. He set off whites and greys against 'very small areas of solid black'. In one Romanesque window, apparently echoing the curves of the bride's breasts, appears the hart of Psalm 42. Dilworth also points out that her high forehead is Petra's but her groom is the Saviour with whom Jones identified. (Cleverdon E200: Taylor and Sewell A201 : Dilworth, David Jones pp1178). Protected in a loose Mylar archival cover. Very scarce.

Add to basketLimited edition, number xv of 100 copies on handmade paper with an additional set of the engravings on japon, from a total edition of 410 copies. This copy is bound by the pre-eminent designer bookbinder of her age, Elizabeth Greenhill (1907-2006). It was first sold to Lord Wardington, whose bookplate is on the rear flyleaf, and was sold with his monumental library in 2006. In an enclosed typed letter signed, dated 1983, to Lord Wardington (1924-2005), Greenhill explains that the design was inspired by Hokusai's Great Wave, created by her late sister "many years ago, and at last I have used it for - almost - my last binding". A carbon copy of Wardington's response and two obituaries for Greenhill are also loosely inserted. Greenhill trained under Douglas Cockerell and William Matthews at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. Until the late 1950s her sister Mina provided her with designs for her bindings, but she then began to design herself. Her work was bought by the major collectors of the time and in 1961 she was the first woman to be elected to the Guild of Contemporary Bookbinders (now Designer Bookbinders). The engravings by David Jones here were first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1926. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. Sotheby's, The Library of Lord Wardington: Bibles, 12 July 2006, lot 219. Quarto (275 x 189 mm). With 13 wood-engravings by David Jones, title page and half-title printed in blue-green and black. Contemporary dark blue morocco, flat spine lettered in gilt, wraparound onlay design of a breaking wave and sunrays in white, silver, and varicoloured blue morocco heightened in gilt and silver, light blue morocco doublures, blue flyleaves, edges gilt. Housed in a custom blue cloth solander box together with the portfolio in a chemise. A fine copy.
