Esta não contém uma referência nem à medicina, nem à história natural, nem à filosofia natural no velho e repartido império português. Na verdade, as Luzes mal e tardiamente passaram os Pirenéus; mais depressa atravessaram o Atlântico e chegaram ao Brasil. Mas vários ilustres portugueses, os chamados estrangeirados, e muitos brasileiros os cruzaram nesse século na direção contrária, em busca dos avanços do espírito humano, das liberdades, das ideias, das ciências modernas. (à) Um dos brasileiros que viajou para Edimburgo, então sede da primeira ou segunda melhor escola médica da Europa, foi José Pinto de Azeredo (1764-1810). Um nome a juntar a um Ribeiro Sanches, um José Joaquim de Magalhães ou um Vicente Coelho de Seabra. Em Isagoge patológica do corpo humano, obra datada de 1802, o médico carioca confessa ao leitor (que não teve decerto em abundância: o livro já pronto, nunca foi para o prelo por misteriosa decisão) que o «meu fim é só narrar as causas das enfermidades» (p. 172). Diz fazê-lo sem pretensões de academismo e de perfeição. O seu é um interessantíssimo, refletido, original e autónomo manual de introdução à clínica médica, uma descrição crítica de sistemas e teorias vigentes, carregado de ensinamentos e testemunhos do eminente químico e médico de cabeceira, quanto se sabe, corpuscularista e newtoniano. Senhor.
