Jose Quiroga (1707-1784), inicialmente un marino y luego miembro de la Compania de Jesus, es una figura destacada en la historia de la exploracion y la cartografia de America del Sur. Nacido en Fabas, Galicia, su interes por el mar y los viajes lo llevo a estudiar matematicas y embarcarse como aprendiz nautico, antes de unirse a la Compania de Jesus influenciado por un jesuita que conocio en uno de sus viajes.Su habilidad en matematicas y su experiencia nautica lo hicieron un candidato ideal para tareas de exploracion y cartografia. Fue profesor de matematicas en el colegio de Buenos Aires y participo en importantes expediciones cientificas. Entre sus contribuciones mas notables esta su participacion en la expedicion naval de 1745-1746, que recorrio la costa patagonica desde Buenos Aires hasta Puerto Deseado y Puerto de la Cruz. Esta expedicion proporciono valiosos datos geograficos y cartograficos.Quiroga tambien realizo una significativa contribucion a la cartografia de la region de Misiones. Despues de determinar con precision la ubicacion geografica de treinta pueblos de Misiones y ciudades importantes como Asuncion, Corrientes, Santa Fe, Colonia, Montevideo y Buenos Aires, redacto su mapa "Descripcion del rio Paraguay". Este mapa, publicado en Roma en 1753, aunque no es perfecto, es notable por ser uno de los primeros en su tipo.Ademas, Quiroga jugo un papel crucial en la rectificacion del curso del rio Paraguay en 1752, cuando acompano al comisario espanol Manuel Antonio de Flores para marcar el limite en la boca del Jauru, siguiendo el tratado de Madrid de 1750. Este trabajo fue la base para el gran mapa de America del Sur de Luis de la Cruz Cano de Olmedilla, publicado en Madrid en 1775 y en Londres en 1799, y posteriormente adoptado por Arrowsmith en 1811.Jose Quiroga es recordado por su contribucion al gobierno espanol y su legado en la exploracion y cartografia de America del Sur. Su trabajo fue preservado y difundido gracias a los esfuerzos del padre Domingo Muriel (o Ciriaco Morelli), quien incluyo sus hallazgos en el apendice de su version latina de la "Historia del Paraguay" del padre Charlevoix.
