Den Besuch in Jap…an betrachtet der Österreicher als Höhepunkt seiner Reise. Erst wenige Jahre zuvor hatte das Land sich geöffnet und in der Folge der Meiji-Restauration dem Westen zugewandt. Vor Ort ist Doblhoff schnell ernüchtert. Er muss feststellen, dass die romantisierende Darstellung Japans auf der Weltausstellung in Wien wenig gemein hat mit der Realität im Land der aufgehenden Sonne. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass sich die Stimmung in seinem Reisebericht von anfänglicher Begeisterung zu kategorischer Ablehnung verfärbt.Doblhoffs Reisebericht wird in der hier vorliegenden Ausgabe durch zwölf Fotografien seines Landsmanns Raimund von Stillfried illustriert. Dessen Genre-Bilder sollten den Europäern im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert die faszinierende Welt Japans vermitteln. Außerdem enthält der vorliegende Band auch Doblhoffs einzige von seinem Japanaufenthalt inspirierte Novelle ¿Mamsell Espenlaub¿, die er im Jahre 1900 unter dem Pseudonym ¿Chillonius¿ verfasste. Man darf wohl behaupten, dass Pierre Lotis Roman ¿Madame Chryantheme¿ aus dem Jahre 1883 sowohl beim Titel als auch beim Inhalt des Dobelhoffschen Werkes Pate gestanden hat.
