Er hat sich vor allem mit der Thermodynamik, Elektrodynamik und Optik beschäftigt, und zahlreiche Entdeckungen gemacht: als erster bestimmte Loschmidt die Größe der Luftmoleküle, außerdem bewies er die ringförmige Anordnung der Kohlenstoffatome im Benzolring. Ab 1868 war Loschmidt für mehr als zwanzig Jahre Professor für Physikalische Chemie in Wien. Nach ihm benannt ist die 'Loschmidt-Zahl', die international als Avogadrozahl Eingang gefunden hat.
