Asked to describe a table, a glass, a pitcher, or a cup, we tend to describe the object itself rather than the relationship of its form, surface and texture to thes pace it occupies, or to the light that renders it visible. We are lookign at the object rather than seeing it. Seeing implies an awareness of the visual context of space and light in which the object exists. Looking and seeing are not the same thing. In Bertolt brechts play Life of Galileo, Andrew, the son of Galileos housekeeper, protests that he sees that the sun in the evening is not where it was in the morning and that it can therefore not stand stillö to which Galileo replies, "What do you see?
