Edition originale rare. Il s'agit de l'une des premières monographies sur la lithotritie… chez les enfants. Cette thèse est bien documentée, avec des références bibliographiques en bas de page. Joseph Alcide Mathieu avait déjà une expérience de la chirurgie, ayant été chirurgien externe à l'hôpital Saint-Eloi (à Montpellier). Il deviendra aussi maire de Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance. Mathieu cherche à préciser les indications et contre-indications de la lithotritie, ses limites, ses difficultés, ses complications. Il apparaît enthousiaste par cette "nouvelle méthode". Il précise que les calculs volumineux, non friables ou multiples nécessiteront l'opération de la taille. Mathieu rapporte notamment le jugement de Guersant, l'éminent chirurgien de l'hôpital des Enfants-Malades. Les coupures de presse jointes renferment 3 publications de Guersant sur la comparaison entre la lithotritie et la taille.
