    Leather. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A nice copy of the Acta Sanctorum, looking at the Irish Saints, these extracts written by Charles de Smedt and Joseph de Backer. In Latin. A work discussing the Saints of Ireland. Containing the works of Charles de Smedt and Joseph de Backer contributed to the Acta Sanctorum. The Acta Sanctorum was created by the Bollandist Society, in which both of the authors of this work were involved in. Since the seventeenth century the Society have studied hagiography, and the saints in Christianity. The Acta Sanctorum is their most important publication. The idea of the Acta Sanctorum came from the Dutch Jesuit Heribert Rosweyde, who used his spare time collecting information of the lives of the saints. With a frontispiece and engraved title page. Printed in double columns, with two page numbers to each page. Charles de Smedt was a Belgian Jesuit priest, and a hagiographer. He joined the staff of Acta Sanctorum in Brussel in 1870, and revived the Bollandist Society, founding the Society's scholarly journal 'Analecta Bollandiana'. Backer helped her set up this journal, alongside G. van Hooff. Bookplates to the front pastedown, 'Ex Bibliotheca Seminarii S. Ioannis', and Booksellers label to the front pastedown. In a quarter morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the spine and boards. Small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine.
