There is a split along the hinge of the rear pastedown. Not a library book or remainder. The pebbled blue boards are in very good condition (one bumped corner). ELY, former Governor of Massachusetts, one of the leading figures in the Democratic party, twice governor of Massachusetts, well-known opponent of the New Deal, studies the fundamentals of American democracy in this forceful book, based on speeches and addresses, some of which are already famous, including the Woodrow Wilson memorial address at the Springfield Auditorium, and the speech nominating Al Smith [for President] at Chicago, which is regarded by many as one of the greatest ever delivered at any national convention. The book contains considerable new material about the Al Smith campaign which was approved for publication by Smith himself. This volume is designed not only to portray the development of Mr. Ely's own convictions, but beyond that to lay bare what in his judgment are the fundamental weaknesses of a democracy watered with Socialistic and Communistic principles. It is his hope that by cutting through the New Deal facade of high-minded reform and lofty platitudes, some light may dawn on those who would abandon the representative democracy which has made us great. XX Joseph Buell Ely, a Yankee Democrat, was born in Westfield, Massachusetts, on February 22, 1881. He attended the public schools of Westfield, graduated from Williams College and from Harvard Law School, being admitted to the Massachusetts Bar prior to the completion of his law course. He became a member of his father's law firm in Westfield and Springfield. In 1915 the Honorable David I. Walsh appointed him district attorney for the western counties of Massachusetts. In 1916 he was elected to the same office for a term of four years. In 1925, Mr. Ely became associated with the distinguished Boston law firm of Ropes, Gray, Boyden & Perkins, heading their trial department until elected Governor of Massachusetts, to which office he was reelected in 1932 by a substantial vote. He went to the Democratic Convention at Chicago in 1932, to nominate Alfred E. Smith for the presidency. In 1934 Governor Ely decided not to seek reelection, believing, then, as now, that new faces in elective offices are essential to the preservation of our form of democracy.
