Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st. About this Item SIGNED 1st Edition by Joseph McElroy on the title page 531pp. 8vo, Orange paper over boards backed in linen cloth with copper-gilt stamped design of tangled film to front cover and spine, top of spine glue is starting to detach from the book, but mildly. This is the best condition of this book that I could find on the internet. Very clean and fresh with sharp edges and square binding. The slightest wear on the top right of exterior pages. McElroy's fourth novel and by many accounts his best. A sprawling, complex, and experimental narrative surrounding a film shot by two expat American living in England and the network forces that are threatened by it. Grouping it with Gravity's Rainbow and J.R. as one of the great 'Art of Excess' novels of the 70's, Thomas LeClair writes, 'in Lookout Cartridge, density, discontinuity, and a mobius-like twisting of informations take place simultaneously to make t more than any of McElroy's other fictions, a new, profound, and compelling imaginative model.' (Modern Fiction Synopsis With Lookout Cartridge , Joseph McElroy established a reputation as one of contemporary fiction's foremost innovators and deft observers into the fissures of modern society. It is a novel of dazzling intricacy, absorbing suspense, and the highest ambition: to redeem the great claim of paranoia on the American psyche. In trying to figure out just who is so threatened by an innocent piece of cinema verità filmed in collaboration with a friend, Cartwright finds himself at the heart of a mystery stretching from New York and London to Corsica and Stonehenge. With each new fact he gathers, both the intricacy of the syndicate arrayed against him and what his search will cost him become alarmingly clear. About the Author Joseph McElroy is the author of eight novels, including A Smuggler's Bible and Actress in the House (both available from Overlook). He is the recipient of a Prize in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and fellowships from the Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and Ingram Merrill Foundations.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. MCELROY, Joseph. Lookout Cartridge (signed review copy). New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1974. 8vo. First edition, first printing. Publisher's cream cloth lettered and decorated in gilt to the spine and front board, in the striking dust jacket designed by Fred Marcellino. Inscribed by the author to title page, 'for David '[-] my fourth book'. Publisher's review copy with review slip loosely inserted. A near fine copy, the cloth clean and bright, the gilt decoration a little rubbed and dulled, the binding tight and square, the contents fine throughout. The dust jacket unclipped ($10.00) and fine, minor mark to spine head, but a sharp example and scarce with the author's signature. A bit of a white whale of postmodernist reading and book collecting, albeit a fair bit slimmer than some of its fatboy comrades. 'A gigantic mystery set mainly in London and New York' as yet unread by this cataloguer but which, reportedly, influenced David Foster Wallace's opus, Infinite Jest (1996), if at least in its key plot component of a missing film. Very scarce; the print run was low, and an equally small paperback printing in 1985 remains the only such reprint, for now. Signed by Author(s).

Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st. MCELROY, Joseph. Women and Men. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1987. Thick 8vo. First edition, first printing. Publisher s quarter cream cloth over slate grey boards, lettered in gilt to the spine and upper board. In the dust jacket designed by Carin Goldberg. This copy signed without dedication by McElroy to the title page. As New Mylar covered copy, the cloth clean and bright, the binding tight and square with the usual slight sagging from the crown as is always the case; this is a tome. The contents as new, the dust jacket unclipped ($27.50), complete and fine. McElroy s monolithic masterpiece of postmodern fiction, often aligned with Joyce s Ulysses, Pynchon s Gravity s Rainbow, and Gaddis s The Recognitions for its size, complexity, and maximalist style. Published simultaneously to the trade edition was a special leather-bound limited edition published by Ultramarine Press, in a now-dubious edition of 99 copies it is rumoured the number is much less. The novel continually growing in both reputation and scarcity, especially so signed Synopsis The dilemmas and possibilities of the romantic enterprise in late twentieth-century society are reflected in the lives of James Mayn, a journalist, and Grace Kimball, a leader in the women's movement Reviews The daunting (1190 pages) length of this novel is the least of the impediments the author imposes between its sheer mass and the most willing reader. Even more challenging is a narrative manner by design elusive, at times opaque, interspersed with digressions, eccentricities, parentheses and asides. The plot focuses on the lives of James Mayn, a journalist come to New York from a town in New Jersey, and Grace Kimball, a feminist/therapist who conducts what she calls a Body-Self workshop for women who have been through the mill. (She is Mayn's neighbor, though the two never meet.) Gradually, fragment by fragment, aspects of their lives are examined, along with the lives of their families, friends, associates, in an effort to encompass a wide range of American experience and some sources of contemporary anxiety and anguish: marriage and divorce, parents and children, sexual deviation, U.S. intervention in Latin American politics, environmental pollution and destruction, nuclear devastation. Across the affective spectrum from estrangment to connectedness, the narrative voices return always to the themes of feeling. "It's what's between us," a voice says, "or we share." McElroy's ambition is heroic (the novel represents a decade's work), his canvas densely peopled, the animating talent unmistakable; but his narrative method is so diffuse and fragmentary, so willfully withholding of information, that the reader's admiration can soon give way to fatigue. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. This work belongs to that neglected genre of the Sixties, the mega-novel. It is a sprawling narrative full of weird characters, confusing subplots, multiple time frames, and huge chunks of esoteric information. The story focuses on a meteorologist, James Mayn, and a feminist, Grace Kimball, who live in the same apartment building in New York, though "focus" may be the wrong word: a basic structural device is to touch briefly on a wide range of subjects, then circle back and add more detail. Thus, there are digressions on the weather, lesbianism, space exploration, the CIA's role in Chile, and the many uses of jojoba beans; only after a few hundred pages can the reader begin to discern any pattern. McElroy's critical reputation has always been impeccable, his audience negligible. (His most recent novel was Lookout Cartridge, LJ 2/1/75.) This book probably won't change that. It is not sexy or suspenseful, but it is endlessly fascinatingand it is McElroy's most ambitious, most successful work to date. Edward B. St. John, Loyola Marymount Univ. Lib., Los Angeles Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

As New, Mylar covered copy, the cloth clean and bright, the binding tight and square with the usual slight sagging from the crown as is always the case; this is a tome.

First edition, 1st printing. 8vo. 1,192 pp. Original quarter navy leather over aegean blue marbled and ornamental, paper-covered boards, stamped in gold. Faint pulling to spine crown. Book is tight, square and firm. Faint handling & shelf wear. Rubbing to corners and panel edges. Interior clean and unmarked. A lovely example, a collector's copy. Very scarce. Binder Denis Gouey reports that less than a dozen orders for this title were filled and so while the numbered limitation is 99, the true number of units may be much, much lower. Hardcover: Near Fine "Women and Men is Joseph McElroy's sixth novel. Published in 1987 (with a 1986 copyright), it is 1192 pages long. Somewhat notably, because of its size, the uncorrected proof was issued in two volumes. The size and complexity of the novel have led it to be compared with Ulysses, The Recognitions, and Gravity's Rainbow. The novel is 16th on the Wikipedia list of longest novels, and seventh among novels written in English, and the longest ever written in North America. There were two first editions?neither dates itself before the other. In April 1987, the first trade edition was published by Knopf. Ultramarine Press published a limited, numbered, signed edition, consisting of the Knopf edition (including its copyright and title page) rebound in leather. One month later, Knopf issued a second printing, with an expanded copyright/acknowledgements page.". Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York: Harcourt, Brace and World, (1966). First edition, 1st printing. 8vo. 435 pp. Original black cloth-covered boards, stamped in gold & teal, in original unclipped ($6.95) dust-jacket. Mild handling, rubbing and shelf wear to jacket. Tape repairs and presumed color correction to jacket - particular to spine ends and tips. Toning, creasing, a vulnerable jacket now protected in archival mylar. Book is square and firm with mild handling & shelf wear. Interior clean and unmarked. Signed and inscribed by the author. A rare example, especially so signed, of the author's first book. Dust Jacket: Very Good Hardcover: Very Good "A Smuggler's Bible is Joseph McElroy's first novel. David Brooke?who talks of himself in a split-personality manner?narrates a framing tale that consists of him "smuggling" his essence into eight autobiographical manuscripts, although their connection with Brooke is not always clear. Brooke seems to deteriorate, while his fictions become more real. In ordinary English, a "smuggler's bible" refers to a book with a cutout in the body of the pages, suitable for hiding small items when the covers are closed. McElroy explicitly acknowledged the influence of William Gaddis The Recognitions in an interview, and also in his "Neural Neighborhoods" essay, where McElroy states he was already well into his own novel when he read the Gaddis novel.". Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: NEAR FINE. Dust Jacket Condition: NEAR FINE. First Edition. SIGNED by Joseph McElroy on the title page and inscribed to noted photographer and fine-press publisher, Stathis Orphanos. With his partner, Ralph Sylvester, Orphanos was a concerted collector of California and particularly Hollywood fiction. 531pp. 8vo, Orange paper over boards backed in linen cloth with copper-gilt stamped design of tangled film to front cover and spine, deckled fore edge, light blue topstain. Very mild bump to the spine head and a small drip stain to the fore edge, otherwise entirely and uncommonly clean and fresh with sharp edges and square binding; DJ with some trivial rubbing to the tips and one short tear to front head, crisp and bright otherwise. McElroy's fourth novel and by many accounts his best. A sprawling, complex, and experimental narrative surrounding a film shot by two expat American living in England and the network forces that are threatened by it. Grouping it with Gravity's Rainbow and J.R. as one of the great 'Art of Excess' novels of the 70's, Thomas LeClair writes, 'in Lookout Cartridge, density, discontinuity, and a mobius-like twisting of informations take place simultaneously to make t more than any of McElroy's other fictions, a new, profound, and compelling imaginative model.' (Modern Fiction Studies 27.4). Signed By Author.
