"Je me propose d'étudier les maladies de la Guyane en mettant en relief les différences pathologiques que présentent les diverses races habitant cette colonie" (préface). Son point de vue, à la fois très hygiéniste, et très pessimiste, conclut à la stabilité absolue des particularités génétiques héritées et donc à l'impossibilité d'acclimater les Occidentaux dans les climats tropicaux.
