Joseph Parrocel a réalisé un premier recueil de 48 gravures à l'eau-fortes titré « Les mystères de la vie de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ » qu'il offrit à l'Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1696. Ce receuil offert à l'Académie a probablement disparu. Les épreuves de ce premier état à l'eau-forte sont très rare. Les planches ont été ensuite reprises au burin avec de nouvelles pièces portant le nombre de planches à 65. Elles sont regroupées en deux séries: « Les mystères de la vie de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ » et « Les Miracles de la vie de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ » L'ensemble présenté ici comprend 64 gravures sur les 65, il manque la planche n°1 qui comporte le titre de la première partie. In fine se trouve une planche supplémentaire non légendée, signée Parrocel, montarnt le triomphe du Christ ressuscité.
