"In seinem im Jahre 1821 in der Stadt [Frankfurt] erschienenen Werk "Pyrotechnie ." schrieb Joseph Serviere im…"Zweiten Theil" .: "Wenn wir die alten Zeiten mit den neuern vergleichen, und in der Geschichte der vergangenen Jahrhunderte die Zerstöhrungen wahrnehmen, welche das Feuer damals anrichtete, wo ganze Strassen, ja ganze Dörfer und Landstädtchen abbrannten, so müssen wir solche Unglücke sowohl der unsinnigen Bauart der alten, der Enge ihrer Strassen, des Gewinkels in ihren Häußern, als der völligen Unkunde der Löschanstalten zuschreiben. So brannte im J[ahre] 1711 in Frankfurt die ganze Judenstrasse ab; und dieses wird in unserer Chronik der grosse Judenbrand genannt. Im J[ahre] 1719 brannte die Töngesgasse und viele anstossende Häußer der benachbarten Gassen ab; dieß wird der grosse Christenbrand genannt." Zu den von Serviere genannten Ursachen kam eine weitere: Weite Teile der Bebauung bestanden aus Fachwerk und das Holz bot den Flammen ideale Nahrung. Besonders beengt waren die Wohnverhältnisse in der Judengasse, dem im Osten der Stadt gelegenen Ghetto. Hier kam es am 14. Januar 1711 zur ersten der von Serviere genannten Katastrophen, dem "Großen Judenbrand", der bis heute so bezeichnet wird, um ihn vom wenige Jahre später ausgebrochenen "Großen Christenbrand" abzugrenzen und die hauptsächlich betroffene Bevölkerungsgruppe zu benennen." (vgl. Ralph Zade, Frankfurter Stadtbrände). Als weitere Brandgründe werden z.B. genannt "Das jetzt so häufige Branntwein Saufen (wirklich Saufen) der Bauernburschen und Knechte, die oft in der Betrunkenheit nicht wissen was sie thun, verursacht ebenfalls manches Feuer.".
