Joshua Oldfield (1656-1729) studied under Ralph Cudworth and Henry More; he later became friendly with Locke and Newton. This is his most important work, drawing largely on Bacon and Locke.

Contemporary brown paneled calf, stamped in blind, all edges sprinkled red; plain endpapers; [50],viii,424,[12]pp. Contemporary ownership marks of Thomas Jones on endpaper, flyleaf, and title page. A sound volume with professional repairs (rebacked with portions of original spine laid down, corners reinforced); front board somewhat splayed; old staining to upper internal corner of first few leaves: generally Very Good. Oldfield (1656-1729) was an English Presbyterian divine. In 1694, with William Tong, he formed "an academy for training students for the ministry," which was eventually "recognized as the best [teaching] available to dissenters at the time" (ODNB). He was in contact with both John Locke and Issac Newton, and he also published a handful of sermons and a book on the Trinity. He was generally "considered as a minister who avoided extremes in religious controversy, but who was at the same time a strong supporter of civil and religious liberty" (ODNB). Uncommon.
