The whole being interspersed with sketches of the life in the mining camps of the "Far West"; forming the only reliable work on the subject ever offered the public by Prof. Thos. J. Dimsdale". Henry Plummer was the ignoble sherriff who was hung. A passionate narrative in defense of the citizen-formed group of vigilantes took control back from "road agents" running towns as criminal enterprises in Montana in the 1860s following the Alder Gulch gold strike in particular, and, in general a description of life in the early West.
