Very Good in Dustjacket. 0875800254. 632 pages. hardcover. The jacket illustration, a map of Mexico with mountains by Baptiste Agnese, is from a portolan atlas in the Ayer Manuscript Collection, The Newberry Library, Chicago. Jacket design by Gary Gore. keywords: Latin America History. DESCRIPTION - Four centuries after his death, the star of Las Casas's reputation stands higher than ever in the firmament of world opinion,' write the editors of this book honoring the memory of Las Casas. A controversial figure in his own day (1474-1566), Las Casas might well be the New World's first political activist. Championing the cause of the Indians in 'Overseas Spain,' Las Casas threw his heart, soul, and fortune into a highly volatile movement. He became the 'Protector of the Indians' and devoted fifty years to the destruction of Indian slavery. The tendency to separate historical figures from the currents of their times has led historians to an inaccurate evaluation of events. The outstanding role played by Las Casas in the first half of the sixteenth century in the controversial Indian policy of the Spanish Crown incited historians to adopt a personal approach, whether in favor of or against his theories and struggles on behalf of the Indian. A closer look, however, reveals Las Casas as a representative of a well-defined Indianist movement, resulting from the political, economic, and intellectual situation in Europe after the discovery of America and its large Indian population. This situation divided Spanish society into colonists anxious to secure their subsistence by exploiting the Indians, and men of good will opposed to this exploitation, basing their ideas on the equality of men preached by the Catholic Church and on Renaissance ideals concerning the dignity of men. Las Casas belonged to the second group, first as preacher of the Christian brotherhood of all men, then as politician supported by the Spanish Crown, and afterwards as activist. He was, however, defeated by the reality of America itself-conquered and settled by private enterprise-which created an arrogant and independent colonist whom neither the Crown nor the Church was able to intimidate. Over the four centuries since his death, the Teputation and influence of Las Casas and his ideals, and the uses made of his writings, have indeed varied with social, political, and intellectual conditions. The primary purpose of this volume is to increase understanding of the man and his work by presenting English translations of the findings of leading modern European and Latin American specialists on Las Casas. With the exception of the essays by Marcel Bataillon and V. Afanasiev, all are original studies that were written especially for inclusion in this volume. All the essays by foreign authors, except that of Father Biermann, who sent an English version of his article before his death, were translated by Benjamin Keen. inventory #3876.
