Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Good. This exhibition catalogue brings together an international group of 12 younger artists whose work consciously blurs the boundaries between art, architecture and design, autonomous sculpture and functional object, environmental installation and interior decor. The work presented draws upon… sources in high art, including Minimalism and Formalism, as well as industrial design from the 1930s-1960s, and architecture from the 1920s-1960s. While the 'look' of much of this art may have its initial impetus in the clean-lined rationality of Bauhaus design, it is then rejected with unexpected, idiosyncratic, and improvisatory elements. The artists include Kevin Appel, Angela Bulloch, Clay Ketter, Roy McMakin, Jorge Pardo, Tobias Rehberger, Joe Scanlan, Joep van Lieshout, Pae White, and Andrea Zittel. Guest curator Steven Beyer is the assistant artistic director of the Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia. Mark Robins combines curatorial projects, teaching, and installation art. He was curator at the Wexner Center for the Arts from 1993-1999, where he worked on the seminal Fabrications exhibitions. Book has minor shelf wear. Front cover has smuge mark on it.

Paperback. Condition: New. Alessandro Michele's creative direction at Gucci, starting in 2015, transformed the brand into a maximalist, gender-fluid and intellectual aesthetic that blended vintage-inspired, eclectic designs with philosophical and cultural referencesBefore Alessandro Michele took the creative helm at Gucci in 201…5, the brand was mostly known for its sleek sophistication and sexy hedonism. Despite having worked at the Italian fashion house for over twelve years as the accessories and jewellery designer, Michele was relatively unknown in the fashion industry and the public sphere. All of that was to change when he sent his models down the runway for the 2015 Fall/Winter ready-to-wear collection in an eclectic mix of pussy-bow blouses, chiffon dresses, wallpaper prints and a motley collection of accessories, including fur-lined loafers, berets and granny-style horn-rimmed glasses. Michele's stylistic design approach created an aesthetic reminiscent of the fashion eccentric who wears flea market finds with high-end designer and heirloom pieces - imperfect, nostalgic and maximalist. The new Gucci woman (and man) were intellectual and sensual misfits who are perfectly at home in the glamourous rag-tag aesthetic of a Wes Anderson film. With his inaugurate collection, Michele tapped into the zeitgeist that was yearning for a more colourful and playful design, and a disregard of traditional gender divisions: while Gucci has hitherto showcased its men's and women's collections separately, as well as favoured traditional masculine and feminine looks respectively, Michele broke with the idea of a gender binary, ushering in gender fluidity and a new fantastical vision of masculinity.Although his collections were spectacular in their scope (the Fall/Winter 2017 consists of roughly 120 looks), the designs are also a testimony to his ability to scramble signifiers of gender, pop culture, history and time. Referencing and borrowing from philosophical concepts and ideas, such as the infamous Cyborg collection (Gucci Fall/Winter 2019) that envisioned subjectivities beyond the confines of the human body with replica heads or extra eyes on their hands; the Fall/Winter 2016 collection titled 'Rhizomatic Scores', referencing Deleuze and Guattari's influential concept; or the Fall/Winter 2020 menswear collection titled 'Masculine, Plural' that referenced Butler's notion of gender performativity, Michele exemplifies a fashion auteur who knows how to play not only with gender signifiers but also with signifiers of time, culture and species.

Soft cover. Condition: New. Summary:This is the first anthropological monograph of Muslim and Hindu lives in contemporary Myanmar. In it, Judith Beyer introduces the concept of "we-formation" as a fundamental yet underexplored capacity of humans to relate to one another outside of and apart from demarcated ethno-religious lines…and corporate groups. We-formation complements the established sociological concept of community, which suggests shared origins, beliefs, values, and belonging. Community is not only a key term in academic debates; it is also a hot topic among Beyer's interlocutors in urban Yangon, who draw on it to make claims about themselves and others. Invoking "community" is a conscious and strategic act, even as it asserts and reinforces stereotypes of Hindus and Muslims as minorities. In Myanmar, this understanding of community keeps self-identified members of these groups in a subaltern position vis-à-vis the Buddhist majority population. Beyer demonstrates the concept's enduring political and legal role since being imposed on "Burmese Indians" under colonial British rule. But individuals are always more than members of groups. The author draws on ethnomethodology and existential anthropology to reveal how people's bodily movements, verbal articulations, and non-verbal expressions in communal spaces are crucial elements in practices of we-formation. Her participant observation in mosques and temples, during rituals and processions, and in private homes reveals a sensitivity to tacit and intercorporeal phenomena that is still rare in anthropological analysis. Rethinking Community in Myanmar develops a theoretical and methodological approach that reconciles individuality and intersubjectivity and that is applicable far beyond the Southeast Asian context. Its focus on we-formation also offers insights into the dynamics of resistance to the attempted military coup of 2021. The newly formed civil disobedience movement derives its power not only from having a common enemy, but also from each individual's determination to live freely in a more just society.
