Als Edith Fellowes na jaren van moederlijke zorg ontdekt wat Stasis met Timmie van plan is, neemt ze een fataal besluit. Proefkind werd geschreven door twee wereldberoemde science fiction-auteurs. Het boek is gebaseerd op een fascinerend kort verhaal van Asimov dat onder de titel Het lelijke jongetje verscheen.
