Ces Notes sont les articles qu'il publia au lendemain de la condamnation de Dreyfus qu'il croyait alors coupable, et ceux qu'il donna au Figaro, après la dénonciation d'Esterhazy par Mathieu Dreyfus. Marie Durvis (1854-1936), belle-fille du docteur Jean-Martin Charcot et demi-soeur de l'explorateur Jean-Baptiste Charcot, veuve d'Henry Liouville, épousa en 1888 Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau, ministre de Gambetta et Jules Ferry - l'initiateur de la grâce d'Alfred Dreyfus en 1899 et de la loi qui, en 1900, amnistia « tous les faits criminels ou délictueux connexes à l'affaire Dreyfus ou ayant été compris dans une poursuite relative à l'un de ces faits ».
