Mehrfach ausgezeichneter Klassiker des französichen Film noir, den François Truffaut als den besten Kriminalfilm bezeichnete, den er je gesehen habe. Der amerikanische Regisseur J. Dassin, Sohn eines russisch-jüdischen Emigranten, war nach ersten Hollywooderfolgen 1951 nach Europa emigriert, als er nach einer Denunziation vor das berüchtigte "Komitee für unamerikanische Umtriebe" geladen wurde und dadurch seine Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten in Hollywood verlor. Tatsächlich war er ab 1930 Mitglied der Kommunistischen Partei der USA gewesen, aber nach Abschluß des Hitler-Stalin-Paktes enttäuscht wieder ausgetreten. Mit Rififi konnte er erst 1955 seinen ersten Film im französischen Exil drehen, da von amerikanischer Seite Druck auf europäische Produzenten ausgeübt wurde, die exilierte Amerikaner beschäftigten und die dadurch befürchten mußten, ihre Filme könnten von den USA boykottiert werden. Dassin war mit der griechischen Schauspielerin, Sängerin und langjährigen griechischen Kulturministerin Melina Mercouri verheiratet und lebte später mit ihr in Griechenland. Sprache: de.

Vier begabte und gründliche Verbrecher, Meister ihrer Fächer, wollen ein Juweliergeschäft in Paris ausrauben. Unter ihnen ist auch Toni, der gerade aus der Haft entlassen wurde. Die präzise vorbereitete Aktion wird ebenso perfekt ausgeführt, doch bei der Flucht mit der Beute lauert ihnen eine gegnerische Gangster-Bande auf und es kommt es zu einer blutigen Auseinandersetzung. In-8° (cm 22'5 x 14), pp. 337. Tela edit. e oro, privo di sovracc e di cofanetto. Ex libris nobiliare al verso del piatto. Titolo ispirato da un gioco, tipico del sud Italia, detto appunto "la legge". Le riprese del film di Jules DASSIN cn Gina Lollobrigida, Marcello mastroianni ecc.) si sono svolte in particolare nel GARGANO, precisamente a CARPINO, mentre alcune scene sono state riprese a RODI GARGANICO, ISCHITELLA, PESCHCI e San Menaio. La "Baia di Manacore" esiste veramente a breve distanza da Peschici. Uno dei primi film girati sul Gargano.
