Contact seller3-star sellerA pocket-sized book of war poems penned by New York state senator and lawyer Julius S. Berg, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Published "in this inexpensive form in order that it should be within the reach of all who desire to read it" (dedication). The poetry itself is not terribly skilled and often cringe-worthy ("Sing a song of death shells / Full of mustard gas, / Choking, coughing, sneezing men / Dying in the grass"), but it provides evocative insight into the life experiences of veterans and New Yorkers post-WWI. Berg (1893-1938) ended his life with a gun shot following his indictment by a grand jury on seventeen counts of larceny and embezzlement. His wife attributed his death to illness and nervousness. Single vol. (6.75" by 5"), pp. 60, in original printed wrps. Very good. Some creasing to wrappers.…
