First published in Paris in 1930, L'islam et les musulmans dans l'Afrique du Nord is a concise political and historical essay by French writer and former colonial administrator Eugène Jung (1863-1936). In seven chapters, Jung outlines what he presents as the changing position of Islam in the wider world and then turns to the realities of Muslim life under French rule in North Africa—especially Algeria—before extending his observations to Tunisia and Morocco. The book combines commentary on institutions, rights, governance, and public life with a reform-minded conclusion and two appendices. Written on the eve of major political shifts in the Maghreb, it offers a period snapshot of French colonial debates about Islam, Muslim communities, and policy in the region.
