This humanist edition presents those letters alongside the learned commentary and textual emendations of Claude de Mino (Claudius Minoas), a French jurist of the sixteenth century, whose notes transform the work into a window upon both Roman antiquity and Renaissance scholarly methods. Minoas's commentary was first published by Jean Richer in 1588; this 1598 Gueffier edition is an enlarged reissue of the same workits notes "amplified in this new edition"valued by Renaissance scholars, classicists, and those fascinated by the history of textual scholarship and the transmission of the classics from antiquity to the early modern period.Paris: François Gueffier, 1598. The title page displays Gueffier's handsome printer's markan oval medallion bearing an allegorical figure of Liberalitas with the monogram "FG"and proclaims royal privilege: "Cum gratia & Privilegio Regis." This copy is Volume II only; Volume I is lacking, which notably diminishes the value of what would otherwise be a complete set.
