Condition: Fair. 1843. Tomus Secundus. 636 pages. No dust jacket. Half bound brown leather with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt lettering. Textblock is in Greek and Latin. Pages are heavily tanned with noticeable foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Textblock edges dyed brown. Hinges are slightly cracked with exposed netting. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is darkened. Moderate peeling and scuffing to spine, edges and corners. Visible wear marks to boards.

Condition: Fair. 1842. 315 pages. No dust jacket. Red marbled boards half bound in brown leather. Printed in both Latin and Greek. Vol.I. Book has been rebound. Pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, with moderate foxing. Binding has remained firm. Inscription to front pastedown. Boards are a little rub worn, slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are mildly crushed.

Full Leather. Condition: Good binding. An early 18th century Amsterdam imprint of Justinus' Philippic Histories. Full leather, rather crudely repaired with a new leather spine simply pasted to the boards. All edges dyed red. While the repair is flawed to say the least, the book is complete and holding. With an engraved frontispiece. [2], 276, [64] pages, [1] leaf of plates. Good binding.

On date le plus souvent son existence au IIIe siècle, mais certains la place au IVe siècle. On ne sait presque rien de sa vie. Il est l'auteur d'un Abrégé des histoires Philippiques (Epitoma Historiarum Philippicarum en latin), un ouvrage qu'il présente dans sa préface comme un florilège des passages les plus importants et les plus intéressants du volumineux ouvrage intitulé Historiae philippicae et totius mundi origines et terrae situs, rédigé par Trogue Pompée à l'époque d'Auguste.L'oeuvre de Trogue Pompée ne nous est connue qu'à travers le fameux abrégé réalisé par Justin de ses Philippiques, qui traite de tous les pays conquis par Alexandre Le Grand.

Title label a little rubbed, vellum slightly grubby, internally the text is lightly browned but generally quite clean. Additional engraved title, title in red and black. A reprint of the first Graevii edition (1688), but with all the important notes. Dibdin notes (of the earlier Graevii edition) that "these editions, containing all the variorum notes and those of Graevius, are much superior . Graevius . corrected the errors of Bongarsius, and formed the text of Justin by sober critical rules. The four last editions are preferable, as they contain the notes of Faber, Vorstius and Scheffer" (Dibdin 4th ed. page 139). The notes mentioned above are all included in this variorum edition. Later (late-eighteenth century) full-calf, raised bands, spines in six panels, contrasting title / volume labels to second and third panels, volute corner pieces and central lozenge shaped tool to remaining panels, gilt flower head frame to covers, all edges marbled with blue paste endpapers. Rubbed to extremities, slight loss to head of spine of volume one. Internally some light soiling to a couple of the index pages in volume two but not affecting sense, otherwise fairly bright and clean. Previous owner's name to title and first page of volume two. Additional engraved title by Van Gouwen, with letterpress in red and black. A reprint of the first Graevii edition of 1688, but with all the important notes. Text block tight and complete. Some discoloration and foxing to the pages, but never very bad. Name on the front endpaper, "Robt Goldsborough jun. his book. January 21, Anno Domini 1752." Ancient history in the original Latin. It's not entirely clear which Robert Goldsborough signed his name in this book. There were two Robert Goldsborough's at Myrtle Grove in 1752. Robert of Myrtle Grove was 50 when the name was written. His nephew Robert was 19. It seems more likely that it was this younger Robert who wrote in the book. This is the Robert who served on the Continental Congress. We have more than 2 dozen books from the Goldsborough family, dating back to the late 1600's on the eastern shore of Maryland. Qualche ingiallitura ma nel complesso buon esemplare - GRAEVIUS,JOHANN GEORG (1632-1703), erudito e critico di classici tedesco, nacque a Naumburg, Sassonia, il ventinove gennaio 1632. Originalmente si intendeva di legge, ma fece conoscenza con J. F. Gronovius a Deventer. Sotto la sua influenza che ha abbandonato la giurisprudenza per la filologia. Ha terminato i suoi studi sotto D. Heinsius a Leida e sotto i teologi protestanti A. Morus e D. Blondel ad Amsterdam. Durante la sua residenza ad Amsterdam, sotto influenza di Blondels ha abbandonato il Luteranesimo e si è unito alla Chiesa Riformata; nel 1656 è stato nominato professore di retorica nell'università di Duisburg. Due anni dopo, in seguito alla raccomandazione di Gronovius, fu chiamato come erudito a Deventer; nel 1662 fu trasferito all'università di Utrecht, in cui ha occupato in primo luogo la cattedra di retorica e dal 1667 fino alla sua morte (11 gennaio 1703) quella di storia e di politica. - Libro usato.
