Contemporary binding by Riviere (signed on the front endleaf with an ink pallet) of polished calf, the covers with a gilt border composed of two fillets and a floral roll. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label, the others tooled with flowers, sprigs etc, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with a gilt zig-zag roll, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (A few dark spots on the covers and one panel on the spine slightly rubbed). A fine copy of this handsome edition of Juvenal and Persius, printed by Whittingham. There is a preliminary leaf with a printed presentation from E.C. Hawtrey, the headmaster of Eton, completed by hand with the name of the recipient, Ramsay, and the date 1849. This is also in a red border. The binding by Riviere is an early and typically neat example of his work. Robert Riviere was apprenticed to a London binder before setting up business in Bath in 1829. He returned to London in about 1840 and was soon established as one of the foremost West End binders.

Haarlem, Wilhelmus van Kessel, 1709. Leather-backed boards. 2 parts in 1 volume. (38), 330; (20), 66p. With engraved frontispiece by J. Goeree. 1st edition. Some coloring of the frontispiece and a few other unimportant stains. Shaken. 'All the satirical poems of Decius Junius Juvenalis and A. Persius Flaccus translated into Dutch verse by various poets.' Collection of Dutch translations from Juvenal's Satyrae and Persius, too. Dedicated in print to young Lukas Schermer, a most talented poet and translator, who was already very ill and doomed to die (1688-1712), but managed to write a great many poems in his short life plus a number of translations from Latin and Greek. In this book several of Juvenal's Satires that contain homosexual passages, were translated into Dutch by different poets. By comparing, we get an impression about how some 17th century Dutchmen looked at the mysterious phenomenon. / A modern translation into Dutch may be added to this anthology.

8°: pi1 *--2* 8 3* 4 (-3*4) A-2C 8, gepag.: [40] 330, 66 pp. Gegraveerde titepagina door Jan Goeree, typografische titelpagina in zwart en rood met vignet Mijn glas loopt ras. Perkament, goed exemplaar.
