Brill, Boston / Leiden, 2002. XIII,371;16,10,5,8p. ills.(B&W photographs and line drawings). Paperback. Nice copy. ?The study of the classical tradition has long been a disparate one. All too often scholars have tended to concentrate upon the influences of antiquity in one writer or artist, and failed to place these influences i…n a wider context. Yet, without this context, the classical tradition is little more than an exercise in erudition. This volume (?) is therefore a welcome collection of seventeen essays that draw parallels between the many and diverse aspects of the classical tradition in the early modern period. (?) The volume will be useful to historians of all aspects of the early modern period, as well as historians of the classical tradition and cultural history. (?) the standard of scholarship is generally high, and the essays carry copious references to further scholarship.? (IAN MACGREGOR MORRIS in the Journal of Roman Studies, 2003, p.348). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux.

Hardcover. Condition: New. vi, 437 pages : 24 cm. Summary:"This monograph studies the constructions of 'impressive' historical descent manufactured to create 'national', regional, or local antiquities in early modern Europe (1500-1700), especially the Netherlands. This was a period characterised by important political changes an…d therefore by an increased need for legitimation; a need which was met using historical claims. Literature, scholarship, art and architecture were pivotal media that were used to furnish evidence of the impressively old lineage of states, regions or families. These claims related not only to Classical antiquity (in the generally-known sense) but also to other periods that were regarded as periods of antiquity, such as the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of appropriate 'antiquities' and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in Europe, especially in the Northern Low Countries"-- Provided by publisher.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The new definition of the animal is one of the fascinating features of the intellectual life of the early modern period. The sixteenth century saw the invention of the new science of zoology. This went hand in hand with the (re)discovery of anatomy, physiology and - in the seventeenth century - th…e invention of the microscope. The discovery of the new world confronted intellectuals with hitherto unknown species, which found their way into courtly menageries, curiosity cabinets and academic collections. Artistic progress in painting and drawing brought about a new precision of animal illustrations. In this volume, specialists from various disciplines (Neo-Latin, French, German, Dutch, History, history of science, art history) explore the fascinating early modern discourses on animals in science, literature and the visual arts. The volume is of interest for all students of the history of science and intellectual life, of literature and art history of the early modern period.Contributors include Rebecca Parker Brienen, Paulette Choné, Sarah Cohen, Pia Cuneo, Louise Hill Curth, Florike Egmond, Karl A.E. Enenkel, Susanne Hehenberger, Annemarie Jordan-Gschwendt, Erik Jorink, Johan Koppenol, Almudena Perez de Tudela, Vibeke Roggen, Franziska Schnoor, Paul J. Smith, Thea Vignau-Wilberg, and Suzanne J. Hardback, XVI+384 p., 160 x 235 mm. ISBN 9782503512020. The thirteen articles in this volume deal with the Neo-Latin emblem book after the birth of the genre with Andrea Alciato?s Emblematum libellus (1531). While the interest in emblematics has grown considerably during the last decades, the seminal Neo-Latin production has rec…eived relatively little attention. In Mundus Emblematicus an international team of experts in the field makes this part of the emblem tradition accessible to a broad scholarly audience. The articles cover a variety of emblem books published at the time, ranging from influential humanist collections (for instance those by Achille Bocchi, Hadrianus Junius, or Joachim Camerarius) to alchemist (Michael Maier) or religious emblems (such as the books of the Calvinist Theodere de Beze, or the Jesuit Herman Hugo). In each paper subjects dealt with include the historical context of the work and its makers, the relation between word and image, the structure of the collection as a whole, and the emblematic game (intertextuality in word and image). Moreover, several articles explore the interaction between the emblem and connected literary phenomena, like the commonplace-book, the fable or the use of commentaries. All papers are in English and all examples from Latin texts are translated. Together, these articles show the variety within the Neo-Latin emblem production, thus challenging traditional approaches of the emblem. As such Mundus Emblematicus contributes towards a more comprehensive view of the forms and functions of the genre as a whole. Languages : English. 0 g.
