Tempe, Arizona: Bilingual Press/Editorial Bilingüe, 1989, vi, 455pp., . Series: Clásicos chicanos / Chicano classics, 4 Introduction by Santiago Daydi-Tolson, Gordon Kahn's A Long Way from…Home: A Wishful Journey (pp. 1-14). - Presents a compelling evocation of the differences between the United States and Mexico, the treatment of minorities in the United States, the suppression of legitimate dissent during the McCarthy period, and, in Mexico, the exploitation of the less privileged classes that was perpetuated despite the Mexican Revolution of 1910. - Written in the early 1950s and published posthumously. - Gordon Kahn (1902-1962) was an important Hollywood screenwriter during the 1930s and 1940s until he was blacklisted for his independent political opinions and was unable to continue working there. Kahn was also a gifted journalist who had a column in the New York Mirror and during his career wrote for The Allantic Monthly, Holiday, Reader's Digest, Esquire, and Playboy. His works include Hollywood on Trial, an appraisal of some of the effects of witch-hunting in the McCarthy era; a collaboration with artist Al Hirschfeld on Manhattan Oases, a book about New York speakeasies; and over forty screenplays, including All Quiet on the Western Front and The African Queen (both uncredited), Ruthless, Her Kind of Man, and The Cowboy and the Sehorita. - A Long Way from Home, Gordon Kahn's only novel, was written in the early 1950s and is now published posthumously. Set during the Korean War and McCarthy eras, the novel tells the story of Gilberto, a young Mexican American who, after his mother's death on the eve of his induction into the United States Army, decides instead to leave the country and travel into Mexico to find his only remaining family. He ultimately joins the Mexican Army, choosing to stay in that country. The novel presents a compelling evocation of the differences between the United States and Mexico, the treatment of minorities in the United States, the suppression of legitimate dissent during the McCarthy period, and, in Mexico, the exploitation of the less privileged classes that was perpetuated despite the Mexican Revolution of 1910. 9780916950903 ISBN 0916950905.
