Die Studie widmet sich, als Kommentar zum Tagebuch, dem reizvollen Reisebericht aus dem Königreich Neapel, in dem gerade zur Zeit des markgräflichen Besuches die großen archäologischen Entdeckungen gemacht wurden. Die Aufzeichnungen von Wilhelmine stellen somit ein lebendiges Zeugnis der Zeit der Ausgrabungen dar. Denn als Schwester des aufgeklärten Preußenkönigs Friedrich II. war sie lebhaft an den Zeugnissen der Antike interessiert. Der zweite Beitrag von Detlef Kreikenbom »Die Aufstellung antiker Skulpturen in Potsdam-Sanssouci unter Friedrich II.« widmet sich der Selbstverpflichtung von Friedrich zur »Mehrung der Künste«. Denn das königliche Ambiente sollte nicht nur bereichert, sonder auch ein Ansehen von europäischer Geltung erhalten.
