Dieser hatte, hier auch lokale Traditionen aufnehmend, Anfang der 1950er-Jahre begonnen kunstvolle Särge nach Kundenwünschen in Form von Tieren, Pflanzen, Früchten, aber auch in Form eines Autos oder Flugzeugs, einer Bierflasche, eines Fußballstiefels oder eines Roboters etc. herzustellen. 1974 brachte der amerikanische Kunsthändler Vivian Burns erstmals die westliche Kunstwelt mit dieser Art Kunsthandwerk in Berührung und machte den Namen in der Kunstwelt berühmt. Inzwischen sind Werke von Kwei und seiner von Söhnen und Enkeln weitergeführten Werkstatt weltweit in Museen und Kunstsammlungen zu finden.
