He worked at the Karolinska Institutet, where he graduated in 1945 and was appointed professor in 1949. His research laid the foundation for the clinical application of Nobel Laureate Ragnar Granit's pioneering discovery of electrorethinography. Gösta Karpe was chairman of the International Society for Clinical Electroretinography (ISCERG or ISCEV) from 1958 to 1973.
