Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. Dust Jacket Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: GOOD. 6 x 8.25' 4to. Klee's Wegweiser, [OCLC 633264664]: [22], 430 pp, colophon; Gabelkover's Artzneybuch [OCLC 1406910362, Krivatsy 4469]: [12], 424, [2]; 434, [3] pp. (Index); + 20 hand-written rear blanks. Tattered and soiled contemporary vellum with revealed waste and structure. Spine concave with some protrusion of Klee at fore edge; a sound copy otherwise with scant pen markings to a few pages of Gabelkover. First Book is Lutheran pastor Karpar Klee's 'Wegweiser,' a scarce book with 2 holdings in OCLS; a spiritual miscellany in three books including dialogues on matters such as Calvinism and other polemical matters, a monthly devotional collection of Lectionary reflections, spiritual writings and prayers written by him with woodcuts for each month, and finall a collection of Scripture commentaries. Title page in red and black with crowned woman holding cross and book seated on bones. Title page and following leaf missing 2 x 3' from fore head corner, subsequent 6 leaves chipped at fore head margin with no text lost. Colophon reads 'Bedruch zu Strassb. Durch Tob. Jobin Anno M.D.CIII.' with his printer's device. Thereafter follows the five volumes of Oswald Gabelkover's 'Artzneybuch', a compendium of popular medicine first published in 1589 and regularly printed through the following century, with sections on remedies for maladies affecting all parts of the body, including psychiatric and nervous disorders; gynecology and pediatrics, with much on skin and hair care and cosmetic preparations; and fevers, wound treatment, and medicinal formulas. The endpapers are where this book gets interesting. The front flyleaf verso contains an undated signature and address of a former owner, a woman named Christiana Rademacher. Beneath her signature is a three-stanza spiritual poem in her hand (we presume her own composition). The first stanza reads 'Ich wil als mein eigenthum Jesu, dich du schoenste blum in mein hers einpflanse' and appropriately a little purple flower was found pressed in the book (impossible, of course, to tell if it was hers). Furthermore, the signature of blank leaves inserted in the rear bear recipes and treatments written in several hands.…
