So wie der Geburtsort des amtierenden bayerischen Ministerpräsidenten Edmund Stoiber das bayerische Idyll verkörpert, scheint die CSU auf eine Art enger mit dem Land Bayern verwoben zu sein als andere Parteien. Oft hört man die Einschätzung, die CSU sei selbst ein Stück Bayern. Die einzige spannende Frage bei Wahlen in Bayern scheint nicht zu sein, welche Partei die Mehrheit erreicht, sondern, um wie viele Prozentpunkte über 50 die CSU liegen wird. Dieser konstante Erfolg einer Partei in einem Bundesland nimmt in Deutschland eine einmalige Stellung ein. In der nachfolgenden Arbeit soll deshalb der Frage nachgegangen werden, auf welchen Faktoren der Erfolg der CSU basiert. Zu Beginn werde ich auf die historisch-strukturellen Faktoren eingehen, innerhalb derer sich die CSU zur bayerischen Hegemonialpartei entwickeln und diesen Status beibehalten konnte. Um den Rahmen der Arbeit nicht zu sprengen, werden sich die Ausführungen im Wesentlichen auf die Zeit der Parteigründung bis ca. 1970 beschränken, als die CSU sich als Hegemonialpartei etabliert hatte. Einhergehend mit der Entwicklung der Wahlergebnisse seit 1946 lässt sich aufzeigen, wie es der Partei Schritt für Schritt gelang, die Trennung der bayerischen Traditionszonen aufzuheben und sich als gesamtbayerische Partei zu etablieren. Die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung Bayerns, die von der CSU maßgeblich beeinflusst wurde und wird, erfordert dabei eine gesonderte Betrachtung.
