In Place, Race, and Story, author Ned Kaufman has collected his own essays dedicated to the proposition of giving the next generation of preservationists not only a foundational knowledge of the field of study, but more ideas on where they can take it. Through both big-picture essays considering preservation across time, and descriptions of work on specific sites, the essays in this collection trace the themes of place, race, and story in ways that raise questions, stimulate discussion, and offer a different perspective on these common ideas. Including unpublished essays as well as established works by the author, Place, Race, and Story provides a new outline for a progressive preservation movement--the revitalized movement for social progress. Dr. Ned Kaufman is principal of Kaufman Heritage Conservation and Adjunct Professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University. He participated in the 2017 HP Hybrid Field School and agreed to share his thoughts on the future of historic preservation. Previously, Dr. Kaufman served as director of historic preservation at the Municipal Art Society of New York, where he led campaigns to protect the African Burial Ground, Audubon Ballroom, Ellis and Governors Islands, and other historic sites. Ned Kaufman's collection of essays aims to persuade readers that the field of historic preservation must expand both its professional boundaries and its scope to maintain the places that meaningfully connect people to their neighborhoods and cities. Kaufman contends that historic preservationists have too often focused exclusively on saving sitesâ"primarily buildingsâ"that are deemed significant because of their form, style, or because of the pedigree of their designer(s). Because this is so, the majority of ordinary placesâ"canneries, factories, barber shops and hair salons, bars, retail stores, boardwalks, and burial grounds (to name a few)â"seldom receive designation as sites of national or even local historic significance. Thus, they are vulnerable sites that are allowed to decay beyond recognition or that are bulldozed in favor of gentrification projects. When this happens, we lose more than the fragments of a historic urban fabric; we also lose what Kaufman calls "storyscapes," or places that "connect to meaningful narratives about history, culture, and identity" (p. 1). The "place" and "story" of his title derive from this issue. Presumed First Paperback Edition, First printing.

Published by New York: Municipal Art Society, 1999, 1999
A late-20th century plea, in quite a large illustrated format, for reconsideration of New York's zoning laws and loopholes, most stemming from 1961 regulations; an effort to limit excessive height, empty plazas, dead streetscapes, paved gardens, and Trump, in any manifestation. An uncharacteristically vibrant and graphic MAS publication. First edition. 38 cm; 12 pp; illustrated from photographs and drawings. Small rubbed patch to rear cover; else a very good copy or better in wire-bound wrappers. stiff wrapper.
