Armstrong Black, August 29th, 1885. Very good. Though the binding is not signed, it is a handsome Victorian binding, well preserved, with the lovely decoratively stamped endsheets. Macniven & Wallace was a bookseller in Edinburgh. They may have commissioned this binding. / The artist for the plates, Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874) was a German painter, noted mainly as a muralist, but also as a book illustrator. He is associated with the Dusseldorf school of painting.
