They found that frequent dust haze, unsteadiness of desert marks seen over great distances, and distortion of natural objects by mirage made traditional surveying methods impossible. Therefore, the author devised new methods, including the use of star observations and calculations based on astronomical measurements, to determine the precise latitudes and longitudes of key points. This book provides an intriguing insight into the lives of those tasked with establishing boundaries between nations in the early 20th century. It also explores the scientific and technological ingenuity required to carry out such an ambitious project under challenging conditions. The author's descriptions of both the local people and the landscape bring to life this remote area and the challenges faced by the expedition. Edward Keeling, 1883-1954, was an officer in the Indian Army Reserve during the First World War, during which time he was captured b…y Ottoman forces and his description of an Anatolian prisoner of war camp is brisk and stark, and there is a postscript in which he denounces British refusal to prosecute those responsible for the mistreatment of prisoners. He escaped, eventually ending up in Bolshevik Russia before serving in Egypt and Kurdistan. His later life was considerably more tranquil, and he died as Member of Parliament for leafy Twickenham.
