Een springvloed zette Zeeland, een deel van Noord-Brabant en Zuid-Holland onder water. 1836 mensen en tienduizenden dieren verdronken, 4500 huizen en gebouwen werden verwoest en 200 000 hectare grond kwam onder water te staan. In De ramp gaat Kees Slager in op de oorzaken en de gevolgen van de tragedie. Hiervoor deed hij uitvoerig onderzoek in archieven en sprak hij met ruim 250 ooggetuigen. Zo is een aangrijpend en onthullend verslag ontstaan van wat er zich in die noodlottige dagen in de winter van 1953 van uur tot uur en van plaats tot plaats heeft afgespeeld. Verder onthult hij niet eerder gepubliceerde feiten over vergeefse waarschuwingen tegen de te zwakke zeewering, verwaarloosde dijken en slecht toegeruste hulporganisaties. Kees Slager (1938) werkte als journalist voor Het Vrije Volk, de vara en de vpro. Hij publiceerde een aantal boeken gebaseerd op overlevering, zoals over het leven van landarbeiders en over de hongerwinter. Eerder verscheen van zijn hand het succesvolle Het geheim van Oss.
