Published by Cartes Taride, Paris, 1917
Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Unbound. Condition: Very Good. A collection consisting of one American map: *Complete War Map of Western Europe* (Nelson Doubleday) and 31 French maps published by the Paris firm of Cartes Taride: *Cartes Taride pour Cyclistes et Automobilistes*. Most depict various parts of France, about 12 depict adjacent areas and parts of other countries (including Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Italy). All 32 maps are printed in color: most measure about 28" x 39", including a few that measure about 20" x 18½". Most of the paper maps are neatly sectioned along the folds and backed onto linen as issued (with mounted printed labels on the front and back panels); seven are on paper sheets folded into a printed paper sleeve. Most have Colonel Reginald H. Kelley's ownership ink stamp on the front and back panel: ("Col. R.H. Kelley, Inf. / P.M.G.O., A.P.O. 706., A.E.F."), including one with General Harry Hill Bandholtz's ink stamp. Scattered modest foxing and rubbing to some of the linen backed maps, some of the printed paper sleeves are toned and split along the sides, overall very good. Reginald H. Kelley began his military career as first lieutenant with the 34th Infantry at Fort Sill (Oklahoma) where he was in charge of the Field Artillery School. During World War I he was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal (July 9, 1918): "for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. First as Division Machine-Gun Officer and later as Commanding Officer, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division ." After the war he taught military science and tactics at the University of California, and served as Director of the Department of Experiment in the Infantry School at Fort Benning (Georgia). Pencil annotations and shading in the American *War Map of Western Europe* likely indicate Kelley's movements along the Western Front just before the final German offensive and Allied counterattack at the Second Battle of the Marne. This annotated area extends (in a wide arch) from Arras to Verdun. Among the towns and adjacent areas highlighted are: Arras, Amiens, Soissons, Marne, Rheims, Chalons sur-Marne, and Verdun. The area northwest of Marne/Rheims is dated "March-April, 1918"; and the area east is dated "June, 1918." The French maps show signs of use, especially those depicting the same area in and around the Western Front, but none bear any visible annotations. A detailed list of all 32 maps is available.
