Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Book Club Edition. A richly illustrated mid-century Biblical novel retelling the life of Sarah and Abraham, blending faith, history, and emotional insight. The Promise re-imagines the Genesis story of Sarah, Abraham, and Hagar - what scholars have called "the wor…ld's first triangle" in human terms of love, jealousy, and divine destiny. Kellner's narrative evokes the ancient Near East with vivid realism and moral clarity, culminating in Sarah's ultimate reconciliation with God's promise. Dust jacket art and endpapers by Paul Laune capture the grandeur of desert life and patriarchal journeys. Red cloth boards with gilt spine titles; jacket bright and well-preserved with light shelf wear at edges and mild toning to rear panel. Previous owner's signature ("Ellen R. Campbell, June 4 1956") on front flyleaf, otherwise clean, tight, and unmarked; endpaper art vibrant. A handsome vintage example of 1950s religious historical fiction in the style of The Robe and The Silver Chalice. Esther Kellner (1911-1996) was an American writer from Indiana best known for her faith-inspired fiction and historical narratives based on the Bible. Formerly a playwright and magazine contributor, she brought human warmth and dramatic clarity to religious storytelling. The Promise (1956) was her most popular work, uniting literary craftsmanship with devotional depth. Paul Sidney Laune (1899-1977) was an American painter, muralist, and illustrator best known for his work in Western scenes and mid-century book illustration. Born in Woodward, Oklahoma, he studied at the University of Oklahoma and later in New York, where he illustrated for The Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. Laune's art combined narrative clarity with a painterly sense of light and motion, often depicting frontier life, ranch culture, and biblical or historical subjects. He is especially recognized for illustrating several Hardy Boys dust jackets for Grosset & Dunlap (volumes in the mid-1940s series such as The Flickering Torch Mystery and The Melted Coins) and for his large murals in the Plains Indians & Pioneers Museum in his hometown. His vivid, cinematic style made him a sought-after choice for 1950s religious and adventure publishers, including Westminster Press and Bobbs-Merrill. Paul Laune (illustrator).
