Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Dutch settlement at Pella, Iowa, had its start in 1847 when Rev. Hendrik Scholte moved his flock to America from the Netherlands. To this day, Pella retains a good part of its Dutch heritage, which includes a Tulip Festival held each May and a working windmill, the tallest in the United States. It also contains the childhood home of Wyatt Earp, which is on display with other historic buildings at the Pella Historic Village. As Pella moved into the 20th century, several manufacturing companies decided to locate there. Pella is also home to Central College, founded in 1853 and today known for its strong STEM programs and sustainability education. The Pella Historical Trust is very active preserving Pella's rich architectural heritage, including the Pella Opera House, which was built in 1900 and renovated in 1990. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The village of Glenwood, Illinois, was founded in 1846 as Hickory Bend--a good name considering the abundance of hickory trees in the area and the winding Thorn Creek, then known as Hickory Creek, running through it. The village most likely would have remained a small farming community had it not been for the decision of the Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad to lay tracks through Hickory Bend. The settlement grew as the railroad developed. Glenwood is situated on the ancient coast of Lake Michigan known as the Glenwood Shoreline and is home to the Glenwood Manual Training School. Founded in 1887 with the help of Robert Todd Lincoln, the school became a residential institution for boys ages 8 through 16 who needed a home for one reason or another. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The first Dutch immigration to the Calumet Region took place in the second half of the 19th century. The area settled by the Dutch spans roughly from what today is part of Chicago's Southside to the western border of Griffith, Indiana, and includes the communities of Roseland, South Holland, Lansing, Munster, and Highland. Once in the region, the Dutch carved communities out of the wilderness by clearing and draining the land and raising large families; descendants of these immigrants still populate the region. Even before the towns existed and on into the 20th century, the Dutch were a community that transcended the borders they established. Evidence of the early settlers is found all around the Calumet Region. It is in the churches they built, the businesses they started, and the loved ones they buried. Evidence of the early settlers is found all around the Calumet Region. It is in the churches they built, the businesses they started, and the loved ones they buried. Ken Bult grew up in the Calumet Region and still lives in the area. He is a graduate of DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in history and has master of arts and master of fine arts degrees from Governors State University in University Park, Illinois. Bult presently teaches computer graphics, photography, and art history in northwest Indiana. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all." - from the rear outer cover.
