Paperback. Condition: New. Discover how high-performing systems shape teaching quality around the world Producing highly skilled and committed teachers is not the work of a single innovative school or the aggregation of heroic individuals who succeed against the odds. In high-performing countries, the opportunities for teachers to learn sophisticated practices and continue to improve are embedded systemically in education policies and practices. Empowered Educators describes how this seemingly magical work is done-how a number of forward-thinking educational systems create a coherent set of policies designed to ensure quality teaching in all communities. . . and how the results are manifested in practice. Spanning three continents and five countries, Empowered Educators examines seven jurisdictions that have worked to develop comprehensive teaching policy systems: Singapore and Finland, the states of New South Wales and Victoria in Australia, the provinces of Alberta and Ontario in Canada, and the province of Shanghai in China. Renowned education expert Linda Darling-Hammond and a team of esteemed scholars offer lessons learned in a number of areas that shape the teaching force and the work of teachers, shedding unprecedented light on areas such as teacher recruitment, preparation, induction and mentoring, professional learning, career and leadership development, and more. Find out how quality teaching is developed and conducted across the globeDiscover a common set of strategies for developing, supporting, and sustaining the ongoing learning and development of teachers and school leadersSee how high-performing countries successfully recruit and train educatorsUnderstand why the sharing of expertise among teachers and administrators within and across schools is beneficial A fascinating read for researchers, policymakers, administrators, teacher educators, pre-service teachers and leaders, and anyone with an interest in education, this book offers a rare glimpse into the systems that are shaping quality teaching around the world.

The story of Ken Ling~the name is pseudonymous~opens in the schools of Amoy with the onset of the Cultural Revolution. Ken's ambition and natural leadership ability soon emerge, but the price is high: He is forced first to humiliate and then to order others to physically abuse revered teachers. Under Peking directives to expand the revolution into society, Ken and his band take to the streets of Amoy City in their green uniforms and Red Guard armbands. Their mission: to destroy the "four olds" ~old thought, old culture, old customs, and old habits. They conduct raids against temples and homes, spreading terror among the unaware people of the city. When the "four olds" movement changes into a rampage of robbery and persecution, Ling leads in a struggle against top party officials in Fukien Province. From there he goes to Peking for a planned link~up of Red Guards from all over China; "Mao's little generals" find chaos everywhere. In Peking, Ken learns that Mao is trying to oust his rival, Liu Shao~chi. In a historic December incident (never before reported by an eyewitness), Ling is present as Liu's wife is hauled before a mass meeting of 100,000 Red Guards who taunt her for her shameful extravagance, and ridicule and insult her. Back in Amoy, Ken Ling, still sixteen, is put in charge of all production for the municipality of 700,000 people. But with hints of Mao's suppression of his own Red Guard, Ken flees to Canton in disguise; and though he later rejoins the Red Guard, his disillusionment has already set in. The ensuing bitter and bloody internecine warfare repels Ling, leading inevitably to the book's dramatic conclusion. THE REVENGE OF HEAVEN is actually a collaboration between young Ling, two persistent researchers. Dr. Ivan and Miriam London, and Dr. Ta~ling Lee, a historian at Southern Connecticut State College. For almost three years, the Londons (he is professor of psychology at Brooklyn College, and she is a research associate in the Soviet and Chinese areas, conducted intensive interviews with Ken Ling and Ken Ling's brother~until an entire world and life were re~created down to their most intimate detail. What began as a work of consummate scholarship resulted in a book as unique as its subject~a remarkable portrait of a young man, a love story, an adventure story, a sort of Chinese Brothers Karamazov. for the first time, a young, intelligent Chinese high up inside the very heart of Mao's organization recounts in detail what life was like in the struggle for a new China.
