Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. 260p., semi-coated paperstock with frontis, preface, introduction and appendices. The lineup includes poems by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, Joaquin Miller et alia. Find two fullpage plates, a photoportrait of Pelton and an imaginary portrait of him standing under heavenly light. There are several steel-engraved vignette…s and a small photo of the "First Baptist church and first public school in California, 1819" (even decades later it is a single building resembling a warehouse); a relevant newsclip is laid in that has offset badly. Also find pencilled brackets and the address of the no longer extant church. Pastedown bears a generic bookplate with another label farther on, the 9x6 inch maroon cloth casing is uglified by shelfwear and fray, dampstaining, and a dimming to near-illegibility of the gilt titling. Hinges are OK, text is clean and sound. Gilman is represented by a single contribution, "Thanksgiving", a twelve-line poem. Pelton was San Francisco's superintendent of public schools and founder of the first public schools in California. His son was the architect of Pelton Homes which can still be found in the Haight.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. New Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; New Edition - First Edition Thus. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping, rubbing and…scuffing. The covers of the book have generalized ground-in dirt. The front cover has an indented partial coffee ring and some beginning fraying. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's bookplate (F. E. Perham) on the front pastedown page. "George Horatio Derby (April 3, 1823 May 15, 1861) was an early California humorist. He attended West Point with Ulysses S. Grant. Derby used the pseudonym "John P. Squibob" and its variants "John Phoenix" and "Squibob." Derby served as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers. In his spare time, he wrote humorous anecdotes and burlesques, often under the guise of his pseudonyms. While waiting for approval of his San Diego River diversion plans, he had some time on his hands. He supplemented his low military pay by contributing humorous articles to the San Francisco Herald, California Pioneer magazine, and the fledgling local newspaper, the San Diego Herald. He wrote articles that poked fun at the figures and pretenses of high society. These articles were written to appear as if a running narrative from John Phoenix and were the state's first published humor. When another writer started writing articles with his pen name Squibob in a competing San Francisco newspaper, Derby wrote an article "killing off" Squibob and continued to write with a new penname, John Phoenix. ". Illustrated by E. W. Kemble (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, 1929 on the title page; B. T. Batsford first editions identified by--'to 1959 no later printings mentioned'). 68 pages of text, 4 page unnumbered Index, Color frontispiece, 5 additional color plates, 66 black and white plates on full-p…age semi-glossy paper, and 66 pages (also on semi-glossy paper) 'devoted to announcements by art dealers, most of whom are owners of Georgian works of art.' These pages bring the book to a close. Once listed, I believe this will be the Only copy for sale with an intact dust jacket (see first three photos). The covers of the book itself are in very nice condition. They are exceptionally clean. I don't see any conspicuous soiling. The gilt design on the front is nicely bright, the gilt lettering on the spine is also nicely bright. There's a little crinkling at the spine ends, the bottom one also has a spot of rubbing. The cover edges look very good. The top corners have only speck-sized spots of superficial rubbing. The front bottom corner has a fairly small spot of rub-through. The page edges look perfectly clean. There is a bump/crease just below the front top corner and another just above the rear bottom corner. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers form a green and white floral decoration. They look very good, though there are a few areas with mild toning. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. I have turned over pretty much all of the pages. They are exceptionally clean. I don't think I saw any soiling at all, certainly nothing conspicuous. That includes all of the illustrations/ plates. There are two pages with a small rectangular shadow just off their top edge, no doubt created by a piece of paper taking up residence there. The only imperfection I'm seeing is a tiny crease just below the tips of the top corners of a large number of consecutive pages. There are no placeholder creases. No markings of any kind. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I have always had the jacket in a fitted protective cover. In fact it had one when I first purchased the book many years ago. I've just now removed it in order to avoid the glare it will create in the photographs. I will replace it with a new protective cover afterward. I can now tell you that the previous owner placed four small pieces of tape on the inside (hidden) of the jacket. One you can make out at the front bottom corner, the second one is behind the thin tear off the front bottom edge. One is behind the top edge of the spine and the other behind the bottom edge of the spine, neither of those seemed necessary. You can of course see the soiling over parts of the front cover. There is also light wear off the jacket's top edges-- crinkling off the front one and nicks off the rear one. There is a large, neat, clip off the top edge of the front flap. I'm not sure why since the price is off the bottom edge of the front flap. It is intact. There is no other print on either flap. Here are the Contents: Preface by the Editor R. R. Tatlock. Introduction by Roger Fry. Painting by J. B. Manson. Architecture and Sculpture by Geoffrey Webb. Ceramics and Glass by Bernard Rackham. Metalwork by W. W. Watts. Furniture by Oliver Brackett. Textiles by A. F. Kendrick. Minor Arts by Louise Gordon-Stables.

The types are Stymie Bold for the text and Franklin Gothic for display, in Monotype and hand composition. The paper is German mouldmade Zerkall. Proofs of the woodblock prints were photographically reduced…to approximately 62% and made into photopolymer plates. The type and plates were printed by letterpress in black ink. Red ink is used on the title page. The binding is a black goatskin spine with title stamped in red, with boards covered with laser-cut veneer replicas of woodblocks by Kendrick, inked in black. Numbered and signed by the artist. Edition of 300. Williams, one of the most important poets of this century, wrote this book of prose-poetry in 1917. He reflects on daily events over the course of a year, his readings, thoughts, observations. To these statements, made in language plain-spoken yet rising to the beauty and imagination of his poetry, he appended further comments or interpretations to make them more intelligible to others. An essay in which Williams explains himself as a figure within the modern movement was added as a prologue. The critic Lawrence Kart claims that the great poetry Williams achieved "would not have been possible without the eruptive prose of 'Kora in Hell'." The book includes prints by contemporary artist Mel Kendrick whose own work is in the modernist lineage. Twenty-one images from three series of woodblock prints, each involving seven separate blocks in the form of long vertical sheets that can be rolled up like scrolls, have been separated and each occupy the recto page of a leaf in the book, with pages of text in between. "Sperm", the long woodblock print as originally conceived by Kendrick in the scroll format, measures 91 1/2 by 20 inches, and was printed by hand by Stacy Petty and Robert Fisher at the artist's studio in New York City, using black ink on Kozo natural, a Japanese paper. The print is in a tube covered in oak veneer inked in black, with a black goatskin cap stamped with titling in red. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
