Arsenic and Old Lace is an acclaimed combination of farce and macabre -- centering on two spinster aunts renowned in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their acts of charity, which secretly includes a serving of poisoned elderberry wine to ease the burdens of the lonely old men who come to their home looking for lodging. The sisters are assisted by their mentally challenged nephew who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt, planting the cadavers in the basement diggings for the Panama Canal. Matters get complicated when a second nephew, theater critic Mortimer Brewster [Allan Joslyn], discovers the murders and a third nephew, Jonathan Brewster [played by Karloff], appears after having just escaped from a mental institution. The play opened on Broadway. on January 10, 1941 and was an immediate critical and popular success, running for 1,444 performances before beginning a national tour. A film version was released in 1944, staring Cary Grant and directed by Frank Capra. There have also been several television adaptations. Joseph Kesselring [1902-1967] began teaching music and directing amateur theatre productions in his native Kansas. At the age of 23, he left academia to pursue acting, writing short stories, and producing vaudeville plays; and at thirty-one devoted himself to writing. Between 1933 and his death in 1967, he wrote twelve plays?mostly light comedies and none of them rivaling the success of Arsenic and Old Lace.
