De negentiende eeuw was vooral de eeuw van de grote ontdekkingsreizen, met beroemde namen als Stanley, Livingstone, Speke en Baker. Dat ook vrouwen zich in onbekende gebieden waagden is echter minder bekend. Zo drong de Oostenrijkse Ida Pfeiffer op Sumatra het gebied binnen van de Batakse menseneters, waarin zich nooit Nederlandse militairen en bestuursambtenaren hadden gewaagd. Daisy Bates werd door de Aboriginals als de geest van een voorouder vereerd, en de Nederlandse Alexandrine Tinne wist diep in Afrika door te dringen. Kielich portretteert negen bijzondere vrouwen die de Victoriaanse moraal ontvluchtten om op ontdekkingsreis te gaan. Duidelijk blijkt dat de vrouwen iets anders zochten dan de mannelijke ontdekkingsreizigers. Zij bezagen de mensen en de natuur met andere ogen en daardoor krijgen hun brieven en reisverslagen een totaal andere dimensie.
