Soft cover. Condition: Good. Manuscript. Small 4to. 20.5cm x 17cm. Unnumbered. C. 119 pages, with no blanks. Contemporary vellum. Signed in several places James Killick, and noted variously Begun November 19th 1787, and then dated 1791. Written mathematical exercises, included their practical application as follows: Page 1- Tables of Squares and Cubes; 2-4 square roots, 5-8 Cube roots, 9-14 Multiplication of £ s d, 15-20 Regular Superficial Measures (ie. two-dimensional), 21-25 Irregular Superficial Measures, 26-31 Circles, 32-60 Solid Measure (ie. three-dimensional), 61- MENSURATION: of the works of the several artificers relating to Building and what Methods and Customs are observed therein. This covers Carpenters, Partitioning, Roofing, Bricklayers, Walling, Chimneys, Plasterers, Joiners, Painters, Glaziers, Masons and so on. A very neat and careful manuscript, often ruled in red, and with elaborate Gothic capitals, occasionally a little dusty, spine split internally between pages 20-21, stitching perishing in second half of manuscript but good overall, with all pages intact. In effect a manuscript of two halves: the first mathematical exercises, and the second their practical application in measuring and trade. A fascinating and illuminating juxtaposition, and a very attractively penned item.
