From the foreword: "The smallpox epidemic of 1738 in Charleston, South Carolina gave rise to a controversy between two of the local practitioners, Thomas Dale and James Kilpatrick. In the fashion of the day they aired their medical quarrel by publishing pamphlets defending their ideas and practices, and in this way made a beginning of medical literature in South Carolina. While these products contributed little or nothing to medical progress, they are of interest to students of medicine in America, and for this reason the one known survivor of the group, a pamphlet belonging to the British Museum, has been reproduced in facsimile." By the same author as 'An Essay on Inoculation, Occasioned by the Small-Pox Being Brought into South Carolina in the Year 1738'. (Garrison-Morton 5416).
