Es dauert Jahrzehnte, bis die Welt fur ihren unverblumten, lebendigen Schreibstil bereit ist. Nell, keine gebildete Frau, sondern eine Lebenskunstlerin, schopft aus ihren Erfahrungen Weisheit und hat das Talent, ihr Leben literarisch festzuhalten. Sie beleuchtet den Alltag im Bordell um die Jahrhundertwende, die Gedanken und Gefuhle der Prostituierten sowie die Beweggrunde der Kunden.
