Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This latest volume in the MoMA One on One series focuses on Frank Lloyd Wright's Broadacre City Project (1934-1935).Frank Lloyd Wright's proposal for Broadacre City (1929-35) put forth a remarkable claim-that the metropolis was obsolete. In its place, Broadacre was to be a "Usonian" synthesis, an unprecedented landscape unsullied by convention or history, consisting simply of "architecture and acreage." With its low-density carpet of small plots, predominantly one- and two-story buildings, and seemingly infinite territory, the ruralized landscape of Broadacre would sustain new levels of individuality and freedom, far more democratic than a traditional metropolis could ever support. Yet the 4-square-mile (10.4-squarekilometer) area of the Broadacre City model would give home to only 1,400 families, making the population density not quite urban or rural or suburban, but somehow their hybrid, with a social and spatial structure that eludes clear definition. Hardcover. Condition: New. Bw photographic boards with white lettering on chartreuse cloth spine. 263 pp. with color and bw images throughout. Did the 20th century live up to what Swedish design reformer and social theorist Elley Key, writing in 1900, envisaged as "the century of the child"? This book, produced in conjunction with a major exhibition at MoMA, tracks the fascinating confluence between the cultures of modern design and childhood, through an introductory essay by Kinchin, 65 short essays, and more than 400 illustrations. The book surveys more than 100 years of school architecture, playgrounds, toys and games, educational materials, nurseries, furniture, animations, propaganda, and more. Quite an exhibition and a study. Very thought-provoking.

First Edition. 2011. 184pp. Colour and b&W illustrations - photos, drawings etc. "Dowanhill Church was designed by William Leiper in 1863 and served as a place of worship until the building came into disrepair in the 1980s. The congregation sold the church to the Four Acres Charitable Trust who started a quest to bring this Glasgow landmark back to its former glory. In the process, they discovered a remarkable decorative interior produced by a man called Daniel Cottier. Cottier, a Glasgow native artist, worked closely with significant contemporaries such as architect William Leiper during the second half of the nineteenth century. Although relatively unknown locally, Cottier became a major influence in international circles as a stained glass artist, decorator, furniture designer as well as art dealer and promoter of younger talent. 'Cottier's in Context' explores the life, work and influence of Daniel Cottier and his contemporary William Leiper, and at the same time details the hugely significant surviving interior of Dowanhill Church." The book is in excellent condition. There are no inscriptions and all contents are tight and clean. PLEASE NOTE: heavyish book so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.

Hard Cover in Dj. Condition: As New. 4to, 264 pages. 12.28x9.76x1.10 inches. In 1900, Swedish design reformer and social theorist Ellen Key published "The Century of the Child," presaging the coming century as a period of intensified focus and progressive thinking around the rights, development and well-being of children. Taking inspiration from Key-and looking back through the twentieth century-this volume, published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, examines individual and collective visions for the material world of children, from utopian dreams for the "citizens of the future" to the dark realities of political conflict and exploitation. Surveying more than 100 years of toys, clothing, playgrounds, schools, children's hospitals, nurseries, furniture, posters, animation and books, this richly illustrated catalogue illuminates how progressive design has enhanced the physical, intellectual, and emotional development of children and, conversely, how models of children's play have informed experimental aesthetics and imaginative design thinking-engendering, in the process, reappraisals of some of the iconic names in twentieth-century design and enriching the unfolding narrative of modern design with other, less familiar figures. Divided into seven sections-"New Century, New Child, New Art"; "Avant-Garde Playtime"; "Light, Health and Air"; "Body Politic"; "Reconstruction, Regeneration"; "Fantasy, Fun and Commerce"; and "Designing Better Worlds"-"The Century of the Child" focuses on individuals and projects that represent innovative and comprehensive contributions to design for children. international orders: please inquire on shipping.
